Teaching and learning in today's increasingly internationalized academic environment is often experienced as a complex challenge, both for students and teaching staff: language barriers and culturally differing concepts, values, working and communication styles are a source of frequent misinterpretations and misunderstandings that can cause critical situations and frustration on all sides.
Against this backdrop, the challenge of effective working with international student groups is to structure the dynamic processes of organising knowledge and communication considering the variety of the students' multilingual and intercultural resources. This includes intercultural sensitivity and the competence of constructive intercultural interaction.
This interactive workshop aims at creating awareness for differing culture-specific concepts, values, behaviours and expectations related to teaching and learning. The participants will learn how to deal with different structures of communication and ways of interaction in multicultural classrooms characterized by the diversity of personalities, values, and working styles. Reflecting on differences and common features will form part of the examination and analysis of their specific professional and cultural background in order to provide successful transfer of the strategies acquired on the training to their own intercultural teaching practice.
Methods:
  • interactive theoretical inputs
  • group and tandem work
  • discussions
  • simulations
  • activating culture-sensitive teaching methods
