The thought of switching the language of instruction from your first language to English is often a daunting one. Have no fear! This two day workshop will better prepare you for this academic challenge.
The first day of the workshop will lay the foundation for teaching in English by scrutinizing what English-medium instruction in higher education means and entails. We will look into the role of language and your role as teacher in the international classroom and subsequently analyze the characteristics of an internationalized multilingual learning environment. Furthermore, we will identify potential stumbling blocks in this context and devise strategies for limiting these challenges and leveraging diversity.
Day two will provide you with some communicative-didactic tools to better navigate this new setting. During the morning of the second day, we will focus on communicative skills for teaching content in English, such as using language to structure your lectures, pose questions and activate students via micro-methods. The afternoon of day two will address responding to student input, followed by simulating a classroom scenario (e.g. handling difficult questions) and subsequent peer feedback on the simulations. The workshop will conclude with a collaborative summary and plenary discussion on the main take-aways from the two days.
