Increasing academic mobility is leading to more courses being offered in English worldwide, rather than in local languages. Whilst sound teaching skills are a basic requirement in all contexts, the use of English as a language of teaching, with students from different cultural backgrounds, increases the complexity of the teaching task. This workshop includes theoretical input, practical exercises, micro-teaching and simulations with individual peer and expert feedback. The core topics covered are English as a lingua franca in higher education, learner-centred pedagogy, and intercultural academic settings. Participants are expected to speak English fluently and with relative ease, even if teaching in English is a challenge for them. They will be encouraged to actively reflect on their individual teaching and learning contexts and have opportunities to focus on the particular challenges they face.
