course.alt.type_seminar  Writing about Teaching: Outlining Your Educational Beliefs in a Statement of Teaching Philosophy

  Beschreibung   Termine   Zurück

Teaching statements are purposeful, reflective essays outlining the writer’s values, goals, and beliefs about teaching and learning. In short, they provide the reader with a sense of the author’s teaching practice and persona and should convey a professional image of their teaching. Such documents can be useful in a variety of contexts and for professional, personal, and didactic purposes. At some institutions or faculties, for example, these documents form an increasingly important part of hiring and promotion processes. At others, they are required documents for teaching prizes and other quality management procedures. But even outside of such compulsory contexts, composing a statement of teaching philosophy, often in combination with a teaching portfolio, can be a rewarding and enlightening activity. As a form of self-reflection, it provides an opportunity for intentional self-assessment. Especially earlier in your career, it can be helpful to reflect on your own teaching practices to give you a better sense of your strengths and develop ways in which you could hone your teaching over time. As living, ever-changing works-in-progress, previous versions of teaching statements can also help more seasoned instructors reflect on their growth, rekindle their dedication to long-held beliefs and values, and even shape new goals. Finally, the results of this self-reflection could also be communicated to students and colleagues in order to make your teaching more transparent, to frame or explain specific teaching-learning activities, or to find potential collaborators with whom you share core interests and beliefs.
In this course, you will get to know the main components and genre conventions of successful teaching statements, gather the concrete materials with which to support your statement of teaching philosophy, draft a first version, and provide and receive feedback on your drafts. The course is conducted in English, but – depending on your needs – it will be possible to write your statement of teaching philosophy in English or German.
