Active Students - Active Learning

Content
In this online course we will cover some background on the importance of 'being active' in learning. We will also have a look at some strategies of how to promote student engagement in higher education learning (on site, blended, online). We will talk about course structure and how it can influence student activity and we will also touch upon the topic of student motivation and what role active learning plays in this context.
The workshop consists of synchronous and asynchronous parts and there will be a time slot for individual questions/transfer to your own teaching situations.
Of course, there will be a lot of activity going on during the workshop. Therefore, please be prepared to be engaged and present throughout the whole workshop.
Objectives
After completing this workshop, participants will
  • be able to name, describe, analyse and apply various methods and tools that can have a positive effect on student activity in small and large groups.
  • be able to describe some of the underlying principles that are the foundation of student activation.
  • have come up with ideas of how to promote active learning in their own courses.

In this online workshop we will cover various topics within the context of student activation in higher education, such as:
  • student engagement and how to promote it
  • teaching and learning activities
  • motivation of students and how to boost it
Tip
This workshop will take place online.
Be prepared to participate actively during the whole workshop day, ideally with camera during the synchronous parts. You’ll be asked to complete a very small task in the week before the workshop (max. 20 min.).
