Racism and Implicit Bias in the Classroom - Anti-Racism in Teaching

Content
Workshop Description:
This two-part workshop will explore ways to cultivate inclusive and conscious learning spaces in the classroom and on campus. Concepts and tools to recognize discriminatory behaviour and patterns are discussed and put to self-reflection, focusing on three broad dimensions:
  • Cultivating inclusive and conscious learning spaces
  • Identify racist and discriminatory communication and interactions
  • Challenge biased knowledge systems, policies and rules
Participants are encouraged to engage in activities in and between both workshops to facilitate experiences and learning opportunities. Spotlights from a Global South perspective will challenge dominant European-centric ways to perceive, interpret and shape the world we live (and educate) in.
  • Intended Learning Outcomes:
After workshop completion...
  • You are able to identify key elements for the strengthening of inclusivity and awareness in your classroom.
  • You are able to engage in conversation about racist experiences and potential racist and discriminatory behaviour.
  • You are able to self-reflect on how you potentially contribute to and uphold discriminatory patterns in private life and within educational institutions.
  • You are able to define for yourself an action plan and raise your awareness in order to identify and counter potential discriminatory interaction in teaching and learning environments.
Learning Environment:
This workshop will be facilitated as an online course with a lot of discussions. Reflection, the sharing of experiences and the mutual development of possible ways to identify and counter racism is encouraged. There will also be presentations on key topics by the three facilitators that represent their diverse backgrounds and approaches to anti-racism.
In-between activities between both workshop parts are an important aspect in order to step beyond theorizing and good intentions.
