Supporting Healthy AI Use in Higher Education: For Curious, Capable, and Cautious Learners

Content
Instructors across disciplines are navigating a new reality: some students avoid AI tools entirely out of fear or confusion, while others rely on them so heavily that they disengage from their own thinking. Between these extremes, many students lack the guidance to build a balanced and thoughtful relationship with AI. And as AI evolves and improves, the risks of overuse are multiplying.
This workshop offers practical, low-effort ways for teachers to help students use tools like ChatGPT in ways that support—not replace—learning, growth, and reflection. Rather than policing usage or promoting hype, we focus on modeling healthy engagement, asking good questions, and shaping student mindsets through small but powerful teaching choices.
In this workshop, we’ll reflect on our own stance toward AI, explore the mindsets behind student behavior, and discuss what influence we realistically have as educators. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of how to support student autonomy and depth of thinking, even when a chatbot is just a click away.
