Large Language Models and Research Assistant Tools and Their Implications for University Teaching: Possibilities and Impossibilities of Science-Supporting AI Tools
Content
The workshop highlights fundamental questions surrounding the use of large language models and research assistant tools, such as ChatGPT, in teaching.
AI-supported technologies that can be used in teaching and learning have been available for some time. AI language models make it easier for teachers to formulate and evaluate exam questions. Recommend-er systems promise adaptive and individualised learning opportunities. Learning analytics can provide students with feedback tailored to their needs. However, these potentials are offset by risks. What about the data sovereignty of students and teachers when all digital traces are analysed? How can we ensure that algorithms are not subject to bias that leads to human errors? What needs to be done to prevent language models from encouraging deception and plagiarism?
The workshop will cover the systematisation and possible applications of common uses, research findings and practical experiences with large language models and research assistant tools in teaching, and there will be room for exchange and discussion.
